The ABI’s Lawyer Registration Scheme (LRS)

Too many times we’ve been instructed by solicitors to engage in an assignment and come to find that we’re being brought in to re-do or clean up another investigator’s work. Without fail:

  1. that investigator’s work has been illegally conducted with inadmissible evidence acquired
  2. said investigator was uninsured, ‘unregulated’ and untrained
  3. the solicitors engaged them in service because they were the cheapest and/or nearest.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

Anyone engaging the services of a professional investigator for whatever reason needs to carry out basic, rudimentary checks – Does the investigator have insurance (professional indemnity, public liability, etc.)? Are they registered with the ICO to handle information in line with the requirements of the Data Protection Act? What is their background and level of training in the field of investigatory work?

For solicitors, there’s an even easier way of having a case come undone through haphazard investigators acting in a manner contrary to law. Get registered with the ABI’s Lawyer Registration Scheme (LRS).

The LRS is a publicly available register of lawyers who have agreed to be included as a means of demonstrating to their clients and fellow professionals that they have exercised proper due diligence in their selection of professional investigator or litigation support agent such as a process server.
