We recently consulted with a prospective client who had serious concerns about a member of staff they recently employed and had been working at the potential client’s company for just over one month.
“They said at the interview that not only were they a qualified electrician but that they used to teach the trade to people just starting out – This guy can’t even change a plug, I’m telling you!” said the concerned business owner.
“Did you ask to see their certificates and the like?” we asked. “What did there references say?”
And then came the all too common reply: “We don’t ask for references here! They’re not worth the paper they’re written on. Employers are blocked from being able to be honest and confirmation that they worked there doesn’t tell us anything!”
It’s an all too understandable point of view, some would say. But to have no follow-up method of verification to confirm the legitimacy of a new or potential employee really does put you, your business and your employees at risk.
That particular member of staff we opened this post discussing? He was so inexperienced as an electrician and so fraudulent with the qualification(s) he presented to our potential client he went on to damage a £20,000+ piece of company equipment with his ‘skills’.
